Course description:  Introduction to computers, programm= ing and applications software. Areas of study include: hardware; problem solvin= g; programming; and application packages such as word processing, spread sheet= s, and data base systems.

 

Course prerequisites: None.

 

Course goals:

·         Understand the evolution of information technology and future trends.

·         Describe the ethical issues surrounding the = uses of digital information.

·         Demonstrate proficiency in the use of various personal productivity software.

·         Understand the functionality and interaction among the main hardware components of a computer and appropriate terminolog= y.

·         Acquire basic knowledge of computer security, protection mechanisms and privacy threats on Internet.

·         Understand the role of computing tools in supporting collaborative projects.

·         Understand the principles of computer networking.

Regent’s policy statement

The University System of G= eorgia requires that all students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs in Uni= versity System institutions (including Georgia Gwinnett College) successfully compl= ete all parts of a competency examination in reading and English composition.  This competency examination is com= monly called "the Regents' Test", and it is free of charge.  A student has two attempts to pass= this test before accumulating 45 hours of collegiate credit.  Please sign up for the Regents' Te= st when you enroll in English 1102.  Do this in time to have two attempts before accumulating 45 credit hours!=

Attendance

You are expected to attend every class.  Failure to attend class will affec= t your grade. 

 

Special arrangements to take a regular exam early must= be made in advance in writing.  E= arly exams are available only at the instructor’s discretion and only under extreme circumstances.

 

IF an emergency arises and you miss an exam you MUST n= otify your instructor on the same DAY as the exam. Notification by email, text or phone message is acceptable. At the instructor’s discretion, make-up = work may have a different format or different content from the regular assignment.  Make-up work shou= ld be completed within two days of the original due date.  Work missed due to unexcused absen= ces will be given a grade of zero. 

 

Students who never attend a class by the end of the fi= rst two weeks of the term will be reported for non-attendance. Students who do = not drop a class during the schedule adjustment period and are reported for non-attendance will be automatically dropped from that course.

 

If you feel that you are unable to complete your cours= es due to illness or family emergency, contact the Registrar’s Office or the Office of Enrollment Management to attempt to withdraw from your courses without penalty.

 

As stated in the GGC Catalog: “Students whose ab= sences exceed two-thirds of the total class meetings in a semester may be administratively withdrawn from the course by the instructor. This includes excused and unexcused absences. Course Changes: 

This course syllabus provides a general plan for this course.  The professor reserve= s the right to make changes to the syllabus, including changes to assignments, projects, examinations, etc., in order to accommodate the needs of the clas= s as a whole and fulfill the goals of the course.  Students should check WebCT regula= rly, as course changes will always be announced and recorded on the course WebCT site.

Academic Integrity

Students may have general discussions about assignments with fellow classmates. Each student must develop his or her solution to the assignment= s, unless assignments are identified as team projects. Students may not ‘share’ work in any form or any portion of an assignment except= on team assignments.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep his/her work secure. Failing to adequately protect one’s work does not relieve the student from acade= mic dishonesty charges.

 

In this class, there will be zero tolerance for dishonorable or unethical conduct. Electronic or physical sharing of answers will be considered cheating and will not be tolerated. If a student is char= ged with Academic Dishonesty, for each charge, a zero (0) will be given for the assignment. Students may appeal a penalty for academic dishonesty to the Academic Dean of the School in which the course is taught (Dr. Tom Mundie) = or to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs (Dr. Stas Preczewski= ). The decision of the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs is considered to be final.

Computer and electronic use during class:

During class, you should silence your cell phone, turn= off your music and refrain from text messaging, emailing, and playing games dur= ing class. Since computers are provided for your use, there is no reason to have your own laptop open during class (unless otherwise directed by the instructor).

 

All computers in the classroom have been equipped with software which allows the instructor to observe and assist students from the front of the classroom. At any time, the instructor can broadcast your comp= uter screen to the rest of the class; therefore, your actions on the computer sh= ould be considered public. Lab Exerc= ises (20%, Individual Effort)=

There are ab= out 10 lab exercises designed to help students acquire and apply skills with vario= us software. Each lab exercise is worth up to 10 points and should be completed individually. Typically, we will discuss the lab exercise on Monday and pro= vide class time on both Wednesday and Friday for completion. Lab exercises are d= ue by the end of class period on Friday. Late lab exercises will be accepted through Friday at 11:59 pm but 5 points will be deducted. After th= is time, no late lab exercises will be accepted.

 

Homework<= /span> (10%, Individual Effort)

Students sho= uld prepare outside of class by reading the assigned material and completing homework assignments. There will be approximately 10 homework assignments. = Late homework assignments will be accepted through Monday at 11:59 pm but 2 poin= ts will be deducted. Quizzes (10%, Individual Effort)

Students sho= uld prepare outside of class by reading the assigned material and completing homework assignments. Impromptu quizzes will be given in class to assess students’ level of preparation and attention. Quiz points may also be given for in-class activities. Quizzes can only be made up if is student is absent because of a documented and excused illness or emergency.

Tests (50%, Individual Effort)

Three (3) tests will be given using objective (e.g. mu= ltiple choice, short answer) questions covering course materials from lectures, overheads, and assigned readings. These tests m= ay be administered in WebCT Vista or given on paper.

Individually= or in teams of 3, students should participate in a project related to the course.= The instructor will provide some structured opportunities; however, students may also choose to design a project on their own. I received my B. S in Mathematics from Georgia State University and an M. Ed. in Secondary Curriculum and Supervision from University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.  After teaching in several states, I changed careers.  While workin= g in software developing, I earned a M. S. in Computer Science at Florida Instit= ute of Technology.  After more tha= n ten years as a computer professional, I returned to graduate school to pursue a= Ph. D. in Computer Science at Georgia Institute of Technology.  I am interested in ubiquitous comp= uting – in the home and higher education – focusing on the human-comp= uter interaction that makes technology useful and usable.
